Espresso water: hardness and BRITA filter life
BRITA's capacity claim has a time limit too. A MAXTRA PRO cartridge's replacement rule can help you plan jug upkeep, but it does not tell you whether the filtered water meets your espresso machine's requirements.

Replace at the litre limit or the time limit
BRITA's jug instructions say: “The maximum lifespan of a MAXTRA PRO water filter is 150 litres or 4 weeks.” That means whichever limit comes first, not a choice between them. Lower use does not extend the time limit. BRITA jug manual, 2026, English section, PDF p. 7, checked 16 September 2026.
The BRITA UK MAXTRA PRO LIMESCALE EXPERT product page says “up to 150 litres” and also mentions “every 4 weeks” in its product information, checked 16 September 2026. The manual makes the maximum-lifespan rule explicit. This is a clarification of the capacity claim, not a contradiction between the sources.
For replacement planning, record when you fit a cartridge and the water passed through it, including water used for other drinks. The stated maximum is not a guarantee of a particular hardness at the outlet or of scale-free operation in your machine.
Start with your own water supply
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) says hardness is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium. Its regional map cannot capture all local variation; it advises asking your water company directly for an accurate measurement. DWI, “Water Hardness / Hard Water”, checked 16 September 2026.
Get the supplier's hardness information, including the units, then compare it with your machine manual's water requirements. This is a way to make the decision, not a claim that a particular tap supply or jug is suitable for every espresso machine. DWI describes some activated-carbon jug filters with ion-exchange resin as altering temporary hardness, but not permanent hardness. That is a limit on what can be inferred from the word “filtered”; it is not a performance measurement of this BRITA cartridge. DWI, “Softening your water”, checked 16 September 2026.
Keep jug care and machine care separate
BRITA specifies cold tap water from municipal water treatment plants. It says to store filtered water in a cool place and use it within 24 hours. Official advice to boil tap water also applies to filtered water. BRITA jug manual, 2026, English section, PDF p. 7, checked 16 September 2026.
DWI advises following the manufacturer's cleaning, maintenance and cartridge-change instructions. Replacing a cartridge does not replace cleaning the jug. DWI, “Domestic water filters and softeners”, checked 16 September 2026.
Do not infer a descale exemption from a jug's capacity. The Sage Barista Express UK UG1 F22 manual retains descaling instructions and says its own water filter reduces the need to descale. Before attempting that model's procedure, read the unresolved rinse wording and warning; a filter claim does not resolve it.
The cartridge has a documented replacement limit. Whether its output suits your machine remains a separate question for your water-supply information and the applicable machine manual.
